A urine sample is tested for indications of underlying medical conditions, such as diabetes. It is not used for drug testing in the context of a DOT physical.
The examiner conducts a thorough physical check of the driver, assessing general appearance, neurological function, heart, lungs, abdomen, and extremities.
If the driver meets all the health requirements, they will receive a DOT Medical Examiner’s Certificate (medical card). However, if the driver has a condition that requires monitoring, the examiner may issue a certificate for a shorter period, requiring more frequent evaluations or there can be situations where a medical card is not issued. In that case DOT Medical Examiner will advise what the next steps are.
